AS PASSED SENATE, FEBRUARY 16, 1988

BACKGROUND:

The Ecological Commission annually presents Environmental Awards to recognize significant contributions by individuals, organizations and businesses who have demonstrated a commitment to protecting the environmental quality of the State of Washington.  In 1987 the Legislature directed that the Department of Ecology adopt an awards program that recognizes environmentally-protective labelling in specified product categories.  The escalating costs and environmental impacts associated with solid waste disposal are causing increased emphasis upon the design and implementation of solid waste recycling and reduction programs which avoid the costs of disposal.

SUMMARY:

The Department of Ecology is to develop an awards program that recognizes achievements in the design and implementation of programs in solid waste recycling and reduction.
