                            AS OF FEBRUARY 1, 1988

BACKGROUND:

Any person 18 years of age or older may voluntarily donate blood.  Current law does not specifically authorize blood recipients to designate the donor of the blood they receive.

SUMMARY:

Hospitals and blood banks must allow recipients of donated blood to designate the donor(s) where; (1) the recipient has solicited the donors, (2) the designated donor consents to the donation, (3) the donation can be obtained in a timely manner, (4) the donor is qualified to donate blood, and (5) the donated blood is acceptable for the recipient's medical needs.  If the donated blood is not used in seven days, it may be used for any other medically approved purpose.
