BACKGROUND:

The Open Public Meetings Act of 1971 provides that meetings of public governing bodies may be attended by all persons and that the actions and deliberations of a governing body should be taken openly.

Executive sessions may be held during regular or special meetings for a number of specified purposes including evaluation of applicants for public employment, evaluation of qualifications of a candidate for appointment to elective office, and discussion of matters regarding enforcement actions or litigation with legal counsel.

School directors are responsible for providing leadership and direction for local school districts.  School boards operate more effectively when directors are able to develop good working relationships through self-evaluation of their performance.
