BACKGROUND:

 

Unclaimed personal property, other than abandoned motor vehicles, that remains in the possession of a county sheriff or city police for a period of 60 days may be disposed of.  Methods of disposal include:  sale at public auction; retention for use by the sheriff or city police; destruction under specified circumstances; or use of the item for trade when acquiring law enforcement equipment.

 

SUMMARY:

 

City police authorities and county sheriffs may donate unclaimed bicycles, tricycles, and toys to nonprofit charitable organizations for use by needy persons.

 

The bill contains a severability clause.
