AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, FEBRUARY 17, 1988

BACKGROUND:

Since the mid-fifties, local organizations in the border areas of Oregon and Washington have been discussing the need for additional bridges in eastern Clark County.  With the rapid growth of eastern Multnomah county in Oregon and eastern Clark County in Washington the demand for additional interstate bridging has been on the increase.  The completion of Interstate I-205 has greatly expanded development in that area, including an airport and a number of "high-tech" business parks.  The area's citizens are very interested in a feasibility study to address the border's transportation needs.

SUMMARY:

The Legislative Transportation Committee is requested to undertake a study of the need for an interstate bridge east of the existing Interstate 205 bridge across the Columbia River to Oregon.  The area to be studied shall be between Clark/Skamania County line on the east and the Interstate 205 bridge on the west, reviewing as a specific location a link between Washington State Highway 14 at Camas and U.S. Highway 30 at Troutdale, Oregon.

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED COMMITTEE AMENDMENT:

The Legislative Transportation Committee is directed to undertake a study of the need for an interstate bridge or bridges across the Columbia River to Oregon, in lieu of conducting a feasibility study for bridging in a specific location.
