                       AS OF FEBRUARY 18, 1988

BACKGROUND:

Suicide among teenagers has increased nearly 300 percent in the last 20 years and is the third leading cause of death among youth nationally.  In Washington State, the rate of youth male suicide equals 26.4 per 100,000, compared to 21.4 nationally.

Recent studies have shown that 79 percent of youths who completed suicide had seriously abused drugs and alcohol in the year prior to their death.

In order to understand this problem, as well as collect state-specific data, a study is suggested.

SUMMARY:

The Department of Social and Health Services shall conduct a study of teenage suicide.  The results of the study shall be reported to the appropriate committees of the Legislature in one year from the effective date of the act.  The act expires December 1, 1988.
