AN ACT Relating to education; creating new sections; and making an appropriation.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     In our complex world it is important that we understand the role of economics and how economics affects our personal life as well as our community, the nation, and the world. To promote such understanding, it is important that economics become a topic that can be included in and enhance the existing curriculum and that teachers have the knowledge and resources to integrate this important topic into the curriculum.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.     In the 1987-88 school year the superintendent of public instruction shall provide one day of in- service training for all third grade teachers on the topic of economics.  In preparing and presenting this in-service program, the superintendent of public instruction shall work with the Washington council for economic education.  In addition to the training, teachers shall be provided instructional materials to support one semester of curriculum in economics that can be integrated into the existing curriculum.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 3.     The superintendent of public instruction shall work with the Washington council for economic education and other groups and individuals concerned with the economy to complete a curriculum for grades five, eight, and twelve on the role of economics in our society and world at-large. The curriculum shall be ready for presentation to teachers during the 1988-89 school year.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 4.     In the 1988-89 school year the superintendent of public instruction shall provide one day of in- service training for all eighth grade teachers on the topic of economics.  On preparing and presenting this in-service program, the superintendent of public instruction shall work with the Washington council for economic education.  In addition to the training, teachers shall be provided instructional materials to support one semester of curriculum in economics that can be integrated into the existing curriculum.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 5.     The superintendent of public instruction shall report to the education committees of the house of representatives and senate on the progress of this program and make recommendations on the effectiveness and need for expansion of this program by January 1, 1990.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 6.     The sum of four hundred thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1989, from the general fund to match matching funds made available by the Washington council for economic education for the development of this curriculum and in-service training.
