AN ACT Relating to the public employees' retirement system; and adding a new section to chapter 41.40 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 41.40 RCW to read as follows:

          (1) Any person who received an exemption from membership under RCW 41.40.120(7) may obtain credit for such service by submitting an application prescribed by the director, together with the contribution which would otherwise have been required of both the employer and the employee, plus interest as determined by the director.

          (2) When employment records sufficient to establish the required contribution under subsection (1) of this section are not available, the contribution shall be calculated by the director based on the first month's compensation earned as a member.

          (3) An employee who is a member of the retirement system on the effective date of this section shall have until June 30, 1989, to make the necessary contributions plus interest under subsection (1) of this section to obtain service credit under this section.  An employee who is not a member of the retirement system on the effective date of this section shall have two years from the date of establishing or restoring membership to make the necessary contributions plus interest under subsection (1) of this section to obtain service credit under this section.
