BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 46.16 RCW to read as follows:

          (1) Upon the application of a person who is a compensated, partially compensated, or volunteer member of any fire department in this state, the department may issue for a motor vehicle registered to the person a license plate bearing a Maltese cross and the letters "F.D."  The design for the plate shall be approved by the director.

          (3) Any person lawfully in possession of a special fire department plate who resigns, is removed, or otherwise terminates or is terminated from association with a fire department, shall return the special plate to the department within fifteen days.

          (4) No person may lend the special plate for use on a motor vehicle other than the vehicle for which it was issued or use the plate for a motor vehicle other than the vehicle for which it was issued.

          (5) Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be assessed a monetary penalty not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than fifty dollars.
