AN ACT Relating to senior citizens volunteering in the schools; adding a new section to Title 28A RCW; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to Title 28A RCW to read as follows:

          (1) Senior citizens have a wealth of experience and knowledge which can be of value to the children of our state.  To encourage the exchange of knowledge and experience between senior citizens and our children, the six-plus-sixty aid program is created.  The purpose of the program is to encourage senior citizens to volunteer as teachers' aides in our public schools.

          (2)  Funds may be used to provide information on volunteer opportunities to the community, to schools, and to senior citizens and may also be used to provide training to the senior citizens who participate in the program.  Funds may also be used to compensate volunteers for their transportation costs by paying mileage, providing transportation on school buses, or providing a school lunch instead of mileage.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.     School districts may use funds appropriated in section 506, chapter 7, Laws of 1987 1st ex. sess., as amended, for the purpose of providing stipends for teachers' aides under subsection (8)(a)(ii) of that section and training for volunteers under subsection (8)(a)(v) of that section.
