AN ACT Relating to the recruitment of teachers; adding a new section to Title 28A RCW; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     In the state of Washington we are seeing an increase in our school populations at a time when many of the teachers in our school districts are ready to retire.  This increase in demand for teachers coupled with the decreasing numbers of people entering the teaching profession is likely to lead to a shortage of teachers.  It is essential that we do all that is possible to recruit qualified teachers and to emphasize the changes which have taken place in the teaching profession which make it a more attractive career choice.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to Title 28A RCW to read as follows:

The state board of education shall develop and distribute a brochure to all eleventh and twelfth grade students and all college students on the benefits of teaching as a career.  The state board of education shall appoint an advisory committee composed of teachers, principals, administrators, parents, students, school board members, the higher education coordinating board, the department of retirement systems, and legislators.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 3.     The sum of one hundred thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated to the state board of education from the general fund for the remainder of the 1987-89 biennium for the purposes of section 2 of this act.
