AN ACT Relating to the state sandwich; adding a new section to chapter 1.20 RCW; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     The legislature finds that the salmon and wheat industries have been and continue to be vital to the economic well-being of Washington state since its inception in 1889.  The legislature further finds that smoked salmon is a symbol of the cultural heritage and tradition of the state of Washington.  Since smoked salmon and whole wheat bread represent both of the major regions of Washington state, it is the intent of the legislature to boost both the fishing and agricultural industries by declaring smoked salmon on whole wheat bread the official state sandwich.

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 1.20 RCW to read as follows:

          (1) Smoked salmon on whole wheat bread is hereby declared the official state sandwich of the state of Washington.

          (2) Suggested state condiments for the state sandwich are as follows:

          (a) Walla Walla sweet onions;

          (b) Mustard;

          (c) Cheese; and

          (d) Mayonnaise.

          Official condiments shall be approved by the centennial commission as provided in subsection (3) of this section.

          (3) The state centennial commission shall authorize a condiment as an official state sandwich condiment, allow the use of the official state condiment seal, and the use of the official state sandwich in product display and promotion if:

          (a) The product is produced in the state of Washington; and

          (b) Payment of a one hundred dollar fee is made to the state centennial fund.

          (4) The Washington centennial commission shall administer the official state sandwich and collect the fees generated under subsection (3) of this section.
