                           ENGROSSED HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 4418

WHEREAS, The demands of the workplace and the needs of families need to be balanced to promote the stability and economic security of families; and

          WHEREAS, State laws should be designed to accommodate changes in the work force, such as the rising numbers of dual-career couples and working mothers, while recognizing the legitimate needs of employers;

          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives of the state of Washington, the Senate concurring, That a select committee on employment and the family be established to consider issues including but not limited to parental and family leave, medical leave, child care, flexible time, and job sharing; and

          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the committee consist of twelve voting members, three from each caucus appointed by the president of the Senate and three from each caucus appointed by the speaker of the House of Representatives.  The committee shall choose its chair and vice-chair from among its membership.  The first meeting of the committee shall be within sixty days of the end of the 1987 legislative session.  All expenses of the committee shall be paid jointly by the Senate and House of Representatives; and

          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the committee may establish an advisory committee to assist in the development of its report, to consist of representatives of labor, business, women's interests, day care, and other appropriate groups; and

          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the committee shall submit a report to the Secretary of the Senate and the Clerk of the House of Representatives no later than January 15, 1988, with any findings and recommendations the committee deems necessary.
