AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION FEBRUARY 16, 1989

BACKGROUND:

In 1987, the Legislature created the comprehensive substance abuse awareness program.  Funds were distributed on a grant basis.  The grant program expires on June 30, 1989.

SUMMARY:

The substance abuse awareness program is continued based on whatever funding is provided in the appropriations act.  This program is made part of a district comprehensive health education program.

Fiscal Note:      Requested February 3, 1989.

House Committee ‑ Testified For:    Judy Hartmann, Superintendent of Public Instruction and Kris Van Gorkom, Washington Association of School Administrators.

House Committee - Testified Against:      None Presented.

House Committee - Testimony For:    This bill would streamline the application procedure for federal drug money and any state money if it should become available.  Districts would be able to submit one application for both programs.  The addition of some state funding through the appropriations act is encouraged.

House Committee - Testimony Against:      None Presented.
