                              SYNOPSIS AS ENACTED

 

BACKGROUND:

 

Each school district must establish a policy relating to the selection of instructional materials.  An instructional materials committee must be appointed and approved by the school board and superintendent.  The committee includes members of the professional staff including curriculum development committees.  If the district is only a K-8 district, the committee must also include an educational service district superintendent to assure correlation of the district's instructional material adoptions with the high school district which would serve these students.  The committee shall make recommendations to the board of directors based on the policy adopted by the board.  The recommendations are subject to approval by the board.

 

SUMMARY:

 

Each school district shall adopt a policy relating to the selection or deletion of instructional materials.  The instructional materials committee may include parents.  Parent members shall make up less than one-half of the total membership of the committee.  Reasonable notice shall be given to parents of the opportunity to serve on the committee.  The school district board of directors may approve or disapprove the committee's recommendations.
