BACKGROUND:

 

The federal minimum wage, as last amended in 1981, is $3.35 per hour.  During the last several years, Congress has considered but not enacted proposals to raise the federal minimum wage.  By voter initiative, the Washington state minimum wage was increased to $3.85 per hour beginning January 1, 1989, and $4.25 per hour beginning January 1, 1990.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The United States Congress is requested to enact, and the President to sign into law, an increase in the federal minimum wage to at least $4.25 per hour by January 1, 1990.
