Requesting that the new Division Street Bridge in Spokane be named the Sam Guess Memorial Bridge.
House Committe on Transportation
Senate Committee on Transportation
AS PASSED LEGISLATURE
BACKGROUND:
Senator Sam Guess served as a member of the Washington state Senate from 1962 to 1986 and was well known for his accomplishments in the area of transportation. As a member of the Legislative Transportation Committee and the Senate Transportation Committee, Senator Guess was instrumental in the passage of legislation creating long-range highway priority programming, the scenic and recreational highway system, the Urban Arterial Board, construction of the two Lake Washington bridges, and removal of the tolls on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
The naming of bridges and highways is the prerogative of the Transportation Commission. The Division Street Bridge on State Route 2 in Spokane will be dismantled this year and replaced with a new facility for a total construction cost of $7.5 million. Many people feel naming the new bridge in honor of Senator Guess would be a fitting tribute to his many accomplishments.
SUMMARY:
The Transportation Commission is requested to begin proceedings to designate the new Division Street Bridge on State Route 2 as the Sam C. Guess Memorial Bridge.
