AS PASSED HOUSE APRIL 10, 1989

BACKGROUND:

Washington's Scenic Vistas Act was established in 1971 as a means of preserving the natural terrain along certain state routes.  State highway segments are added or deleted from the scenic system by legislative authorization.  Once a segment is designated as a scenic and recreational highway, the erection of any new billboards along the route is prohibited.  At the time of designation, an existing billboard is allowed to remain as a nonconforming sign and may be maintained in its original condition.

The scenic and recreational nature of a 7.32-mile segment on State Route 901 along the west side of Lake Sammamish (Westlake Sammamish Parkway) is similar to other state routes that have been designated as scenic and recreational highways.

SUMMARY:

State Route 901, beginning in the vicinity west of Issaquah, then north to the west of Lake Sammamish to a point in the vicinity of Redmond, is designated as part of the scenic and recreational highway system.
