AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON HUMAN SERVICES FEBRUARY 15, 1990
BACKGROUND:
Studies have shown that teenage pregnancy and becoming a teenage parent cause some teenage girls to drop out of school. Innovative methods of combining community resources and having the different generations work together are ways to help teenage mothers remain in or return to school.
SUMMARY:
BILL AS AMENDED: The Department of Social & Health Services will develop a model intergenerational child care program. The program provides child care to children under five whose mothers are under the age of 18. The program will involve elders and college students, seek multiple funding sources, and use existing community resources.
The program will be located in an area that has a higher than average teenage pregnancy rate.
The department will work with other state agencies and local and federal agencies to develop the program.
AMENDED BILL COMPARED TO ENGROSSED BILL: The responsibility for administering the intergenerational child care program is transferred to the Department of Social & Health Services from the Department of Community Development.
