BACKGROUND:
Captain Robert Gray explored and named the Columbia River in 1792 and was the first American to circumnavigate the world. In 1992, there will be a bicentennial celebration of the maritime accomplishments of Robert Gray and George Vancouver, and of the foundation of the Spanish/Mexican outpost at Neah Bay. The Washington State Historical Society is responsible for planning and implementing this celebration.
SUMMARY:
The citizens of Washington and Oregon are to be informed about the celebration of the accomplishments of Captain Gray and urged to share in the fun and festivities of the event. Further, the efforts of the International Committee for the Celebration of the Maritime Bicentennial and the Washington State Historical Society are to be commended and encouraged.
