AS OF MARCH 22, 1989
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Fisheries has an active program of enhancement of salmon, but the department is not actively enhancing other marine food fish species.
There is interest in restoring populations of higher value marine fish, such as halibut, ling cod, rock fish, true cod, herring, etc. through the use of artificial propagation techniques and improved management.
SUMMARY:
A program is created for the enhancement of marine fish, other than salmon and sturgeon. It is funded by a $1 stamp required of recreational anglers and a $30 stamp required of commercial fishermen and charter boat operators. The program will utilize artificial propagation and scientific investigation to improve the management of marine fish populations. An advisory panel of six members representing commercial fishermen, recreational fishermen and the scientific community is created. The act sunsets on June 30, 1994.
