AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT & NATURAL RESOURCES, FEBRUARY 22, 1990

BACKGROUND:

The Wildlife Commission was authorized in 1987 to conduct trophy hunts for game animals by awarding permits at auction to the highest bidder.

There is concern that it may not be appropriate to auction permits for the killing of a wildlife resource that belongs to all state citizens.

SUMMARY:

The issuance of permits to hunt trophy-quality game animals is through raffle procedures established by the Director of the Department of Wildlife.  The Wildlife Commission shall adopt rules defining trophy-quality for each species involved in special hunts.

Appropriation:    none

Revenue:    none

Fiscal Note:      none requested

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED SENATE AMENDMENT:

The auction or sealed bidding on trophy quality hunting permits is deleted.
