BACKGROUND:

 

The Salmon Advisory Council was created in 1977 to assist the Department of Fisheries in planning for salmon enhancement facilities.  The authority of the council was increased in 1988 to include the sale of salmon eggs by the department.

 

Some advisory council members have a desire to address a larger range of salmon-related issues than those specified in the current mandate.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Salmon Advisory Council is authorized to provide advice to the director on all aspects of the salmon program.  The council shall meet at least once every three months.  The sunset date of the council is extended from December 31, 1989, to December 31, 1999.

 

 

EFFECT OF PROPOSED SUBSTITUTE:

 

The Salmon Advisory Council make up and number is changed.  There are nine rather than six members.  Added are one member each from non-Indian commercial fishermen, sports fishermen, and treaty Indian fishermen.
