BACKGROUND:

On January 26, 1855, the Territorial Legislature passed the first authorization to fund a territorial militia which would later become the Washington National Guard.  Since that time the Army and Air National Guard has consistently and frequently responded to national, state and local emergencies.  There are approximately 9,000 volunteer members of the Washington National Guard.

It has been suggested that an annual day of commemoration should be observed in honor of these volunteers.

SUMMARY:

January 26, of each year, is designated as Washington Army and Air National Guard day.

Appropriation:    none

Revenue:    none

Fiscal Note:      none requested
