BACKGROUND:

John A. Cherberg held the office of lieutenant governor for 32 years, longer than any person in the history of the United States.  He ended his illustrious and notable career in this centennial year after setting the standard by which future lieutenant governors shall be measured.  It is fitting that a scholarship to encourage public service by outstanding young people be named and awarded in his honor.

SUMMARY:

The Higher Education Coordinating Board will administer a Cherberg Scholarship program.  For students with a demonstrated interest in public service, the Higher Education Coordinating Board will provide two scholarships each year to eligible students attending each four-year institution of higher education.  Each institution will have one resident undergraduate scholarship recipient and one resident graduate scholarship recipient.

The maximum scholarship amount will be equal to the full cost of tuition and fees for one academic year and is not renewable.  The Higher Education Coordinating Board shall publicize the scholarship, and establish a screening committee which will develop criteria for selecting scholarship recipients.  The recipient must be a resident student with at least a 3.0 GPA, a declared major, achieved at least 90 credit hours toward an undergraduate degree or be working toward a graduate degree, and be a student in a public institution of higher education.  The Higher Education Coordinating Board may award the scholarships from appropriated funds, from a continuing scholarship fund, or from any private donations or other funds made available for this program.
