                              AS OF MARCH 1, 1989

BACKGROUND:

In 1969, the Legislature required that the State Board of Education prescribe a one-year course of study in the history and government of the United States, and the equivalent of a one- semester course of study in the state of Washington's history and government.  It is suggested that the study of other state laws would contribute to students who graduate with a better understanding of state government and legal responsibilities.

SUMMARY:

Statutory language is clarified to reflect that the study of the Constitution of the United States is included in the year-long study of U.S. history and government, and that the study of the Constitution of Washington State is included in the semester-long course on Washington State history and government.  The course on Washington State history and government shall also include study of the laws of the state of Washington including the environment, law and justice, and education.
