                         SYNOPSIS AS ENACTED

BACKGROUND:

The management and safe disposal of hazardous and radioactive waste requires highly specialized skills.  Major waste cleanup efforts have begun on the Hanford Reservation and at Superfund sites throughout the state.  Concern has been raised that certain positions related to these cleanup efforts have remained vacant due to a lack of personnel who meet the specialized qualifications.

SUMMARY:

Washington State University (WSU) and Columbia Basin College (CBC) are directed to study the feasibility of establishing associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degree level waste management programs in the Tri-Cities by the 1991-92 school year.

WSU and CBC are directed, by December 1, 1990, to report on the results of the study to the Legislature, the State Board for Community College Education, and the Higher Education Coordinating Board.
