BACKGROUND:
Many historic theaters are threatened with demolition.
SUMMARY:
The 1989-91 capital budget is amended to include an appropriation to the Department of Community Development for the preservation of endangered community theaters. The appropriation is provided solely for grants to local governments to preserve theaters, and an equal non-state match is required on a project-by-project basis.
If any provision of this act is held invalid, the remainder is not affected.
EFFECT OF PROPOSED SUBSTITUTE:
The appropriation of $1,000,000 is removed. The Department of Community Development is authorized to make grants to local governments to the extent that funds are appropriated for that purpose.
