Transferring duties of select joint committee on sunset review to the legislative budget committee.

BACKGROUND:

 

When the Washington Sunset Act of 1977 was adopted, a Select Joint Committee on Sunset Review was created for the purpose of determining the schedule for termination and review of various state agencies and programs.  Although the committee did recommend the first sunset schedule and has added other entities on a few occasions, it has been largely inactive.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The duties of the Select Joint Committee on Sunset Review are transferred to the Legislative Budget Committee (LBC) and its enabling statutes are repealed.  Also repealed is a requirement that the LBC review tax preferences which should be terminated or modified unless it can be demonstrated that they serve the public interest.
