Allowing transfer of license plates from a destroyed vehicle to a replacement vehicle.

BACKGROUND:

 

Currently if a vehicle is destroyed, the owner shall surrender the title, current registration and the vehicle license plates to the Department of Licensing within five days.

 

SUMMARY:

 

Upon destruction of a vehicle, a person may apply for a transfer of the license plates to a replacement vehicle.  To effect a plate transfer, the person shall pay any difference in the motor vehicle excise tax on the replacement vehicle and a transfer fee of $2.00. 

 

 

EFFECT OF PROPOSED SUBSTITUTE:

 

The transfer and credit of registration fees is restricted to the same use class of vehicles.  If the fees due on the replacement vehicle are less than those paid for the destroyed vehicle, no credit shall be given by the department.
