                            AS OF JANUARY 24, 1990

BACKGROUND:

Current statute provides for two separate classes of antique vehicles.

Those vehicles that are 40 years or older are considered a "horseless carriage."  A "horseless carriage" may receive a special plate of distinguishing color upon payment of all taxes and an additional fee of $25.  They are then issued one plate for the rear of the vehicle.

Vehicles that are over 30 years or older may receive a special plate or a pair of special plates bearing the year of manufacture of the vehicle.  In addition to paying all taxes, a fee of $25 is required to receive the plates.

SUMMARY:

Any vehicle that is 30 years or older and is owned and operated as a collectors item may be issued a special commemorative license plate or a plate designated for use in the year of manufacture.

Vehicles that are older than 30 years may now receive a special plate of a distinguishing color running in numerical order.

Horseless carriages may receive a plate designating the year of manufacture.

The additional fee for both types of vehicles is raised from $25 to $30.
