BACKGROUND:

 

The Dairy Products Commission is a marketing and research order designed to promote Washington State Dairy Products.  The powers and duties of the commission include the ability to conduct scientific research designed to improve milk production, quality, transportation, processing, and distribution.  Additionally, the commission is charged with protecting the public health, preventing fraudulent practices and stabilizing the dairy industry by increasing consumption of dairy products in the state and nation.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Dairy Products Commission is directed to examine the potential impact of any substances which if used in dairy operations may affect consumer acceptance.  The substances to be examined include the products of biotechnology.

 

The commission shall adopt rules restricting the use of any such products found to be a threat to the economic viability of the dairy industry.

 

A person in violation of any commission rules is guilty of a gross misdemeanor.
