BACKGROUND:
Currently, labels on foods, beverages and commercial livestock feed are not required to indicate whether they contain ingredients that were grown or processed utilizing sludge.
SUMMARY:
Any commercial feed, spirits, wine or malt liquor must state on its label whether it contains ingredients grown with sludge.
Food and animal feeds including those produced outside of the state must be conspicuously labeled if sludge was used in processing or growing of the product. The Department of Agriculture is directed to adopt rules to implement this act.
The Department of Health is instructed to conduct an epidemiology study regarding the land application of sludge and report its findings to the Legislature on December 1, 1991.
