BACKGROUND:
The State Heritage Council was created in 1983 for the purposes of adopting, maintaining and monitoring a statewide plan pertaining to history, archaeology, historic preservation and other historical matters. The council receives administrative and financial support from the Department of Community Development.
SUMMARY:
The State Heritage Council is given the additional duties of establishing and overseeing a program of grants-in-aid to local heritage organizations and institutions for projects which preserve or interpret aspects of state and local history.
Administrative, staff and financial support for the council, including the grants-in-aid program, is transferred to the State Historical Society from the Department of Community Development.
The grants-in-aid program is made contingent on funding in the budget.
