AN ACT Relating to presidential elections; amending RCW 29.71.020; and adding a new section to chapter 29.71 RCW.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
Sec. 1. Section 29.71.020, chapter 9, Laws of 1965 as amended by section 1, chapter 238, Laws of 1977 ex. sess. and RCW 29.71.020 are each amended to read as follows:
In the
years in which presidential elections are held, each political party nominating
candidates for president and vice president of the United States shall ((nominate
their)) select presidential electors ((for this state)) and shall
file with the secretary of state ((certificates of nomination for such
candidates at the time and in the manner and number provided by law)) a
list of the persons so selected. The list must include the name and mailing
address of each person selected and shall be certified by the chairperson of
the state committee of the major political party or the presiding officer of
the minor party or independent candidate nominating convention. The
chairperson or presiding officer shall file the list with the secretary of
state not later than ten days after the adjournment of the convention at which
the presidential candidate was nominated. Minor political parties and
independent candidate nominating conventions shall select their presidential
electors in accordance with party or convention rules. Each political
party shall require from each candidate for elector a pledge that as an elector
he or she will vote for the candidates nominated by that party. The secretary
of state shall certify to the county auditors the names of the candidates for
president and vice president ((of the several political parties)), which
shall be printed on the ballot. The names of candidates for electors of
president and vice president shall not be printed upon the ballots. The votes
cast for candidates for president and vice president of each political party
shall be counted for the candidates for presidential electors of such political
party, whose names have been filed with the secretary of state.
NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. A new section is added to chapter 29.71 RCW to read as follows:
Not later than ten days after the adjournment of a major political party convention at which candidates for the office of president and vice president are nominated, the presiding officer of the convention shall certify to the secretary of state the name of each candidate nominated, as it is to appear on the ballot, and the address of each candidate. The secretary of the convention shall attest to the certification.
