AN ACT Relating to child care services on community college campuses; creating a new section; and making an appropriation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     The legislature finds that community colleges provide access to postsecondary education for parents who would otherwise be denied the opportunity and for whom education is the link to self-sufficiency.  Parents, particularly those who are low income and have young children, cannot attend college without child care services available.  The legislature further finds that the efforts of community college student parents to attain economic self-sufficiency should be encouraged and supported through the provision of child care services on community college campuses.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.     The sum of three million five hundred thirty-nine thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1991, to the state board for community college education solely for the purpose of:

          (1) Increasing child care services levels to offer child care services to increased numbers of student parents, care for toddlers, and extended hours of service; and

          (2) Funding staff development for child care personnel.
