AN ACT Relating to the naming of a state fossil; adding a new section to chapter 1.20 RCW; and creating a new section.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     In this year of our state's centennial celebration, the legislature finds the history of our state takes on particular importance.  Because the fossils of our state provide unique and valuable information pertaining to Washington's geologic history, the legislature recognizes the research conducted by students at Cleveland High School in Seattle, Washington, to determine fossils most common in Washington state.  The legislature also recognizes that students across our state have selected the giant sloth as the fossil that would best represent the state of Washington as our official state fossil.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  A new section is added to chapter 1.20 RCW to read as follows:

The giant sloth is hereby designated as the official fossil of the state of Washington.
