AN ACT Relating to corporal punishment in school; and creating a new section.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     (1) The legislature requires the board of directors of each school district to develop a policy that will prohibit the use of corporal punishment and develop guidelines for alternative methods of punishment.  For purposes of this section, corporal punishment includes hitting, spanking, slapping, or striking.  The policy shall be adopted no later than August 1, 1989, and shall take effect in the 1989-90 school year.

          (2) This section does not prohibit the use of physical restraint when the restraint is reasonable and necessary to protect any person from physical injury or to prevent the commission of a crime.
