AN ACT Relating to voter registration transfers; and amending RCW 29.10.040.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
Sec. 1. Section 29.10.040, chapter 9, Laws of 1965 as last amended by section 26, chapter 361, Laws of 1977 ex. sess. and RCW 29.10.040 are each amended to read as follows:
A
registered voter who changes his or her residence from one county to another
county, shall be required to register anew. ((Before registering anew, the
voter shall sign an authorization to cancel his or her present registration in
substantially the following form: "I hereby authorize the cancellation of
my registration in .......... precinct of .......... county." Such
authorization shall be forwarded promptly to the county auditor of the county
in which the voter was previously registered.)) A new registration
shall include the voter's previous registered voting address, precinct, and county
and a signed authorization from the voter to cancel the previous registration.
This information shall be transmitted to the auditor for the county of prior
registration at the same time the name is entered in the register of the new
county. Upon the receipt of such authorization, the county auditor of the
county where the previous registration was made, shall cause the signature on
the authorization to be compared with the signature on the registration record
of such voter, and if it appears that the signatures were made by the same
person, the former registration record shall be canceled forthwith.
