AN ACT Relating to summer school programs at the state school for the blind; adding a new section to chapter 72.40 RCW; and making an appropriation.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. A new section is added to chapter 72.40 RCW to read as follows:
(1) The legislature recognizes the unique and valuable educational resources of the school for the blind and the beneficial purposes served by providing opportunities for those resources to be shared with students who are visually impaired throughout the state.
(2) The superintendent of the state school for the blind shall, as funds are available, hold a special summer session each year for students otherwise eligible for admission to the state school for the blind who are visually impaired and were not enrolled in the school for the blind during the prior school year.
(3) The summer program shall be designed to provide students with exposure to braille and technology for the enhanced use of braille; low-vision training appliances; travel skills; daily living skills; organizational skills; personal development skills including career planning, self esteem, and communications skills; computer skills; exposure to the arts including music and music appreciation; and opportunities for recreation and leisure.
NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. The sum of twenty-four thousand five hundred dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary is appropriated from the general fund to the state school for the blind for the biennium ending June 30, 1991, to carry out the purposes of section 1 of this act.
