AN ACT Relating to drug information services; making appropriations; providing an effective date; and declaring an emergency.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     (1) The legislature finds that the drug information centers at the University of Washington and Washington State University provide rapid and timely information to pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other health care personnel in response to questions concerning drug identification including foreign drugs, indications for drug use, dosing of medications, adverse effects, drug interactions, and chemical stability.  The information requested is generally not otherwise immediately available to the practitioner in standard text books and, in the majority of instances, the response is needed immediately to help solve a problem concerning a specific patient.  It is in the best interests of the people of Washington that the drug information centers continue to provide such information to health care personnel.  The appropriations in this section are to be used to continue funding the drug information centers.

          (2) The sum of sixty thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1991, from the general fund to the University of Washington to fund the drug information center located there.

          (3) The sum of sixty thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the biennium ending June 30, 1991, from the general fund to Washington State University to fund the drug information center located there.

NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.     This act is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, or safety, or support of the state government and its existing public institutions, and shall take effect April 1, 1990.
