AN ACT Relating to state elective offices; and amending RCW 43.01.010 and 44.04.021.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

        Sec. 1.  Section 43.01.010, chapter 8, Laws of 1965 and RCW 43.01.010 are each amended to read as follows:

          The governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, auditor, attorney general, superintendent of public instruction, commissioner of public lands, and insurance commissioner, shall hold office for the term of four years, and until their successors are elected and qualified; and the term shall commence on the Wednesday after the second Monday of January following their election.  No person may be elected or appointed to any of these offices who has previously served twelve years in that office.  No person who currently holds one of these offices may file a declaration of candidacy for any other of these offices.

 

        Sec. 2.  Section 68, chapter 288, Laws of 1981 as amended by section 1, chapter 13, Laws of 1987 and RCW 44.04.021 are each amended to read as follows:

          The regular term of office of each senator and representative shall commence on the second Monday in January following the date of election.  No person may be elected or appointed to the senate who has previously served twelve years in the senate, and no person may be elected or appointed to the house of representatives who has previously served twelve years in that body.  No person may be elected or appointed to either house of the legislature who has previously served a total of twenty-four years in the legislature.  No current member of the legislature may file a declaration of candidacy for a position in the other house of the legislature.
