MOTIONS

      On motion of Senator Spanel, the rules were suspended and Engrossed House Bill No. 1016 was advanced to second reading and placed on the second reading calendar.

      On motion of Senator Spanel, the rules were suspended and Engrossed Substitute House Bill No. 1093 was advanced to second reading and placed on the second reading calendar.

MOTION

      On motion of Senator Newhouse, the following resolution was adopted:

SENATE RESOLUTION 1995-8664

By Senators Newhouse and Sutherland

      WHEREAS, Barbara Acker has worked for the Skamania County Public Works Department since June 5, 1945; and

      WHEREAS, Barbara Acker was eighteen years of age when she began her career at the salary of $115.00 per month as the only woman working for the Public Works Department; and

      WHEREAS, Barbara Acker has maintained her commitment to her career, against medical advice, while battling the debilitating effects of multiple sclerosis which first struck her at the age of twenty; and

      WHEREAS, In her fifty years with Skamania County, Barbara Acker has worked for fifteen different county engineers in three different courthouses, and the county's population has doubled; and

      WHEREAS, Barbara Acker is a strong and active community member, well-known for volunteering throughout Skamania County; and

      WHEREAS, Barbara Acker, while serving as a model for all in any career because of her indomitable spirit, her perseverance, and her strength, is famous among her fellow workers for the cookies she bakes and shares at work; and

      WHEREAS, Barbara Acker's life and career symbolize the dramatic and hard fought changes in Skamania County which have created a recreational wonderland in an area characterized by geologic and natural beauty, big timber, and the everlasting Columbia River;

      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the Washington State Senate that the unique life and fifty-year career of Barbara Acker are hereby honored and celebrated, and that this resolution become a portion of the acclaim she will receive during Skamania County's community recognition of her service and contribution; and

      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Washington State Association of Counties for presentation to Barbara Acker June 4, 1995, at Stevenson, Skamania County.
