(1) Running ropes. You must make a thorough inspection of all ropes in use at least once a month and a full written, dated, and signed report of rope condition kept on file where readily available. You must carefully note any deterioration, resulting in appreciable loss of original strength, such as described below, and make a determination as to whether further use of the rope would constitute a safety hazard:

(a) Reduction of rope diameter below nominal diameter due to loss of core support, internal or external corrosion, or wear of outside wires.

(b) A number of broken outside wires and the degree of distribution or concentration of such broken wires.

(c) Worn outside wires.

(d) Corroded or broken wires at end connections.

(e) Corroded, cracked, bent, worn, or improperly applied end connections.

(f) Severe kinking, crushing, cutting, or unstranding.

(2) Idle ropes. You must ensure that all rope which has been idle for a period of a month or more due to shutdown or storage of derrick on which it is installed is given a thorough inspection before it is placed in service. This inspection must be for all types of deterioration. You must make a written and dated report of the rope condition available.

(3) Nonrotating ropes. You must ensure that particular care is taken in the inspection of nonrotating rope.
