The state board of education consists of sixteen members: Seven members appointed by the governor; five members, including two from eastern Washington and three from western Washington, elected by the members of public school boards of directors; one member elected by approved private school boards of directors; the superintendent of public instruction; and two student representatives selected by the state board of education.
