(1) Lift cars shall have their sides enclosed with solid panels or openwork that will reject a two-inch diameter ball. On the car sides where there is no gate (door), the enclosure shall extend to a height of at least 48 in. from the floor or to a height necessary to enclose the materials that are being moved, whichever is greater. On the car side next to the counterweight runway, the enclosure shall extend vertically to the car top or underside of the car crosshead and horizontally to at least 6 in. on each side of the runway.
(2) Standard application material lifts in unenclosed hoistways shall have a car gate that is constructed of the same material as the car enclosure.
(3) The gate, if required or supplied, shall be the same height as the sidewalls of the car enclosure and shall be provided with a latching device and electrical contact to prevent the operation of the motor and brake if open more than two inches.
