BACKGROUND:

 

The Office of Insurance Commissioner is the only statewide elected office not constitutionally mandated.

 

SUMMARY:

 

This is a referendum bill.  Upon approval and ratification of the voters at the next general election, the Office of Insurance Commissioner is abolished.

 

The Governor must prepare a reorganization plan to assimilate the functions of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.  The plan must be submitted to the Legislature by November 1, 1995, and shall require the Legislature to take action during the 1996 legislative session.  The reorganization takes effect January 13, 1997.
