Limiting terms of certain elected officials.


    AN ACT Relating to term limits for elected public officials; and adding a new section to Title 29 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to Title 29 RCW to read as follows:

    Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a public official elected to office in this state is eligible to serve not more than twelve consecutive years in any position to which he or she was elected.

    A term served due to an appointment to an elective position shall not count against the twelve-year limit.

    Persons who have already reached the maximum term of service as of the effective date of this act are eligible to serve one additional term.

    "Public official" means:  (1) Any person elected to state office; (2) any person elected to a judicial position at the state or local level; or (3) any person elected to an office in a unit of local government, including but not limited to municipal corporations, quasi-municipal corporations, special purpose districts, and local service districts.

    This section does not apply to the public offices covered by chapter 1, Laws of 1993 (Initiative Measure No. 573).
