HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 96-4732, by Representatives Carrell and Talcott
WHEREAS, The voters in the unincorporated area of Pierce County known as Lakewood did by more than a fifty-nine percent margin on March 14, 1995, vote to incorporate; and
WHEREAS, The voters did subsequently elect seven members of the first Lakewood City Council who are being led
by the city's first mayor, Bill Harrison; and
WHEREAS, The Lakewood City Council acted October 30, 1995, to establish February 28, 1996, as the official date of incorporation; and
WHEREAS, The new City of Lakewood is home to more than sixty-five thousand residents, making it the seventh largest city in Washington; and
WHEREAS, The new City of Lakewood encompasses about twenty square miles of beautiful lakes, abundant woods, well-used parks such as the magnificent Fort Steilacoom Park, affordable shopping and international dining inside the 28th Legislative District; and
WHEREAS, Lakewood is proud of its rich cultural diversity, its long-time connection with good neighbors at Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base, its excellent educational opportunities at Pierce College and Clover Park Vocational Technical College, and its access to Puget Sound; and
WHEREAS, The residents of Lakewood will on February 28, 1996, participate in "Celebrate Lakewood," at which time the official city logo and seal will be unveiled;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives do hereby commend the good residents and leaders of the new City of Lakewood for their actions and do extend to them our best wishes for an enjoyable celebration and a prosperous future.
