Requiring that moneys received through settlements with the tobacco industry be deposited into the health services account.


    AN ACT Relating to moneys received by the state pursuant to litigation or settlements with the tobacco industry; adding a new section to chapter 43.72 RCW; and declaring an emergency.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 43.72 RCW to read as follows:

    Unless otherwise directed by an act of congress or, in the case of a lawsuit against the tobacco industry, the ensuing settlement or judicial determination, any recovery for damages received by the state in any such settlement or litigation, exclusive of costs and fees, shall be deposited into the health services account and be subject to legislative appropriation for purposes specified in RCW 43.72.900.

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  This act is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, or safety, or support of the state government and its existing public institutions, and takes effect immediately.
